Conditional Admittance Policies

English as a Second Language Center students can enjoy the benefit of alternate admission routes into the undergraduate or graduate programs at Mississippi State University, including TOEFL waiver possibilities.

Undergraduate Admissions
Mississippi State University welcomes international students to its undergraduate degree programs. International students who successfully complete level 8 of the English as a Second Language program will be considered to have demonstrated English language proficiency and will not be required to take the TOEFL or any other language proficiency test.

Full Admission English Requirements
International Graduate students must submit an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The university minimum is 550 for paper-based tests or 213 for computer-based tests, but many departments have established higher requirements for their own students. For more information, please contact the individual departments or the Graduate Office.
Students

Conditional Admission English Requirements
Graduate students may be considered for admission with a TOEFL score of at least 475 for paper based tests or 153 for computer based tests. Students admitted with a TOEFL score between 475 and 550 will be granted conditional admission and required to enroll in ESL courses.

Students who successfully complete all required ESL courses will be considered to have attained the necessary English proficiency for continued graduate study and therefore are EXEMPT from further TOEFL testing.

ESL "Certificate of Completion" Option
Graduate students may be considered for admission with a TOEFL score of at least 475 for paper-based tests or 153 for computer-based tests and a "Certificate of Completion" from the ESL Center.

Students who successfully complete all required ESL courses will be considered to have attained the necessary English proficiency for continued graduate study and therefore are EXEMPT from further TOEFL testing.
